At Hackney’s Paper Dress Vintage, Grammy-nominated Canadian artist and producer Laura Roy had the pleasure of celebrating and performing her latest release, the ‘Odyssey’ EP. In honour of her latest release, Laura Roy performed her collection of soulful tracks with a live full band, to effortlessly weave together a tapestry of soul-infused grooves. This was Laura's first headline show of the year with support coming from her band; Geo Jordan, Digby Lovatt and Sam Michnik. Frida Touray performed as the opening act of the night.
The stage was set on the second floor of the small boutique shop, in a small live music room where the eccentric walls were draped with garments and accessories. As the smoke machine filled up the small space and a pulsing synth reached all corners, Laura approached the stage with her band to begin the show.
Creating a jazz lounge atmosphere, the opening number 'Don’t Let Me Drown', was a steady-tempo song that set the tone for the rest of the night. Her raw lyrics conveyed an emotional tale that was palpable in the room. The band's accompaniment allowed the Laura's voice to take centre stage, and it was clear from the hushed silence in the audience that everyone was moved by the power of the performance.
Laura went on to perform some of her notable tracks including ‘Sunrise’, ‘Temporary’, ‘Not Afraid’, ‘Breathe’ and ‘Call Me'. As the night went on, the audience was dancing and singing along.
The setlist was a perfect blend of the her latest EP and her 2021 project, 'Tides', that showcased the breadth and depth of her talents. From the first note, it was clear that this was going to be a night of expertly crafted music that would leave all feeling inspired.
Throughout her performance, Laura surprised and delighted her fans with unique displays of talent. After playing a few songs on her guitar, she switched instruments with Geo Jordan and together they delivered a captivating two-person performance that showcased their musical versatility. These unexpected moments added an extra layer of excitement to the show.
In the end, it was clear that this was more than just a concert – it was a celebration of her music journey to inspire. Laura and her band had taken the audience on a journey through the many moods and shades of the genre, reminding them of its captivating power to create and hold treasured memories.
