GET TO KNOW: FLWR CHYLD
Meet the equivocal, multi-disciplined instrumentalist, songwriter and part-time singer, Flwr Chyld. Our conversation explored the path he has crafted for himself; spotlighting the Southern-Funk richness — a fundamental element of his music so far. The Atlanta-raised producer is an artist driven by intuitive pulls responsible for the greatness that is his sound. With 2022 marking the 10th year of his musical journey, we sat down with Flwr Chyld to delve deeper into his journey.
Atlanta, Georgia has progressively risen and elevated the influence of Black music today. Birthing multitudes of artists from Hip-Hop, Trap, and Neo-Soul genres, it’s not surprising that people from this city represent it with great pride and Flwr Chyld was no exception. “Atlanta is a unique city. It's a melting pot of various genres of music,” Flwr Chyld told us. “We’re the capital of Trap music. Right now, I would say [Atlanta] is the capital of Hip Hop because a lot of Hip Hop music has a Trap influence nowadays. Trap has been influencing every other genre. I say it is a melting pot because you have little pockets of people doing cool things”.
“It’s interesting. We have a community of people who appreciate what we do individually. You can pull up to a show where it’s all Hip Hop musicians and; you can be an R&B musician appreciating what you’re seeing. And vice versa. There are plenty of rappers in this city that pull up to my show just because they like what I’m doing. They are there to support. That’s the community. We’re there to support one another.”
At large, no one can deny the significant contribution of American music to pop culture. In it are sharp distinguished sounds and attitudes shining through, depending on the region. While the City of Angels (LA) is driven by buzzing soundscapes of West-Side melodies, the musicians in New York harvest a mellow approach when it comes to music production.“

“Since I’ve been in New York, music wise, I feel most comfortable here, lowkey. Everyone I know is doing their own thing. I can pull up to my friends’ house and nobody else is there. It’s just them and I love that”.
“In LA, 9/10, if you pull up to somebody’s else house to work on some music there’s gonna be someone else there. There will be sessions with like six to 8 or 10 people. I can’t work like that. Sometimes, it’s a lot of egos in one room. Here in New York, it’s calm. I also appreciate that people aren’t focused solely on music here — they do other things as well. That’s why I came to New York, for other opportunities”.
Now residing in New York, until further notice, Flwr Chyld continues to make the conscious effort to tag his hometown in his Instagram posts. “I want people to know that [Atlanta] is where I’m from. This is where this sound is coming from. This sound isn’t coming out of New York. This is where I live but Atlanta is home. A lot of the people there have influenced my sound”.
Being the product of his surroundings, it’s apparent that Atlanta is the blueprint behind Flwr Chyld’s sound. Charmed by the chimes of OutKast, SOS Band, Organised Noize, Metro Boomin and Mike WiLL Made-It, all of which left an everlasting importance on the young music maker. “If you listen to something so much and you grow up to it, it’s going to impact you. I grew up listening to a lot of Atlanta Hip Hop music. I’ve seen how it's evolved over time. For me, it was already part of my sound. For instance, in my song, ‘Lucky Me’, there aren’t trap elements in that but it’s the feeling. It’s a funky feeling — it’s a vibe.”
“I would say my experience with friends [also] influences my work. My friends are like family. Any time we get together, it’s a great time. There are laughs, we go out, drink and have good food. I think about those moments in my music.”
Even though Flwr Chyld’s sonic roots stem from Atlanta’s influence, the young producer isn’t exactly the first person that comes to mind when discussing Hip Hop. Producing melodious rhythms that are both slick and smooth, Flwr Chyld’s music is a remedial affair for all to consume. “I’d say my music is like a fresh cup of tea or coffee; one that you’ve been waiting for all morning. It’s so refreshing,” he told us.
At the age of seven, a young Flwr Chyld found himself mesmerised by the sounds of music. With his father being a music educator and band director from the deep south, he was quickly introduced to Soul Funks, Jazz, Hip Hop and Neo-Soul. By twelve Flwr Chyld, discovered Lex Luger, a pioneer of Southern Hip Hop’s production and a key element in motivating the young artist to embark on his musical trail. How people wish to be perceived is entirely up to them. “I’m honest with my creations. I don’t force ideas. Y’all ain’t heard a forced idea from me. For me, it’s all about letting things flow naturally. You want to put out what you’re happy with”.
So what can we look forward to from Flwr Chyld?
“My album is coming this year. I’m just waiting on a few stems from a few artists. After that, I will spend the next few months mixing, mastering and getting it right. I will be working on that over the next four to five months. I’m aiming for summer for the release of the album”.
With both ‘Lucky Me’ (featuring Sebastian Mikael) and ‘Do 2 Me’ (a joint single with Grimm Lynn), we can only expect further greatness in his discography. His latest single features the UK’s very own Demae. ‘In Your Arms’ is a hypno-tech, luscious lullaby exploring the sweetness of being with a significant other and Demae’s offering in the track elevates its suavity. Being very tight-lipped about the other features on his upcoming project, we were more than thrilled with an exclusive we cannot wait to be revealed. He hinted, “I will say that I love the UK and Demae is not the only UK collab on the project”.
