ARTIST ON OUR RADAR: BOY SODA
Introducing BOY SODA: the Australian R&B singer-songwriter, solidifying his blueprint within the scene. A self-taught producer accompanied by honey-silk vocals, BOY SODA produces a sound leaving many to reflect on the bigger picture of life and how our contributions impact the globe and beyond.
As a product of the Central Coast, on Australia's Darkinjung land, BOY SODA's addiction to the R&B sound spoke to him beyond this physical plane. "Creating something from nothing; is the most beautiful thing in the world," he told us. When exploring the definition of his sound, it’s pretty self-explanatory. Even though he would describe the essence of his creations with two words: "BOY SODA", it is imperative to understand what this means. BOY SODA has crafted a soundscape that is a depiction of his core. Championing the golden wave of the R&B era, his silky tones induced by nostalgic rhythms accompany his openness.
“I ALWAYS PUT THINGS INTO PERSPECTIVE BY ZOOMING OUT AND SEEING MYSELF AS A LIL OLD SPEC IN THE UNIVERSE.”
So who is BOY SODA, really? One thing that’s clear is you can discover his truth in his music. His latest single, "BIG" defines the meaning behind what purpose is and how he intends to fulfil it. “I always put things into perspective by zooming out and seeing myself as a lil old spec in the universe,” he says. “When I zoom back in I see the relationships I share with people, I notice the beauty in the smallest things, (like how nice the new leaf on my plant looks!), and I'm reminded that everything matters! That's the thought that BIG was born from.” Occasionally, falling into the trap of imposter syndrome in the last year, BOY SODA refuses to let that stop him from expressing his unapologetic self to the world. It is in fact his musical intention.
Reminding us of the importance of living in the present, 'BIG' is presented with refreshing visuals of BOY SODA's adaptation of what it means to go on the necessary journey for Self.
“If I'm creating a sonic world there's always a visual one rendering in my brain as I'm making it. A visualiser may serve a different purpose to a fully fleshed-out music video, but the visuals are always there to contribute to the world within that song and space. Being able to consume a song with your eyes is very different from consuming it with just your ears, and I will always jump at the opportunity to provide an experience of both.”
Just last Friday, BOY SODA released his latest EP ‘THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THINKING AND FEELING’: a quest of what it means to truly engage with the truest version of yourself. “It's very reflective of my relationship with self-love and hyper-self-awareness. [It delves into] the journey that has been a mirror into lessons of growth and love. I can only hope that the journey will always feel this way.”
BOY SODA is an individual that doesn't hesitate to give flowers to those he has made a connection with. His inspirations lay within those who are in close proximity to him. "I'm surrounded by a lot of brilliant minds in my life. They all inevitably contribute to how my art arrives," he reveals. "People that can create moments, breathe in music and see in full colour are the people I am lucky enough to call friends, and; they influence me deeply."
On his official website, BOY SODA highlights the creatives who assisted during the manifestation of his recent project. From producers such as Korky Buchek to Dexter, his creative director, and photographer. His acknowledgments are a sheer testament to his character which transcends into his music.
His humility continues to shine through when the conversation shifts to his international success and stardom. “I’m really lucky to have people in different countries and territories that are finding me and my music!” he says.
“I know that the people around me, my closest friends, are great energy to surround myself with because they inspire me and keep my ego in check so honesty is everything. My parents are also very important to me and play a huge role in my remaining down to earth.”
With the hopes to one day make magic with the likes of Rick Ruben, SZA, Kid Cudi, Childish Gambino, FNZ and Sarah Aarons we were eager to know what was next in store for BOY SODA. “We've definitely got some exciting releases planned over the year and some of them are with my friends so I'm excited and really grateful at the same time to do it all with an incredible team.”
