ARTIST OF THE WEEK

Artists possess a gift of distorting reality, to bring forward their own viewpoint on a canvas. Few let brushstrokes paint out their emotions; giving spectators a chance to experience art in the artist’s time. Meet Mafalda Vasconcelos. The exploration of her identity and emotions inspires this expressionist artist to favour these themes in her work.

Elfreda Dali

Elfreda Dalil is a London-based textile artist who transforms leather, cotton, and repurposed clothing into wearable art. She prides herself on craftsmanship and sustainability. With a background in fashion design, her creative process is driven by research into diasporic cultures and expressions.

Elfreda’s work serves as a medium for dissecting narratives of self-exploration and migration. Her collaged materials contrast culture with geography, exploring the “psychological complexities inherent in diasporic journeys, mirroring the intricate pathways of migration and adaptation.” A highly decorated, award-winning artist, Elfreda is a member of the Somerset House Artists in Residence and was named in Arise’s 30 Under 30 in 2020.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH

WEARESOUL RATING

Based in Lagos, Nigeria, the Nike Art Gallery is one of Nigeria's hidden treasures. Showcasing the country's formidable history of artistic talent, this gallery celebrates national and diaspora talent.

Founder of the gallery, Dr Chief Nike Monica Okundaye, is a renowned artist specialising in Adire and Batik textiles. She found liberation in crafting richly detailed wax textiles, then amassing a personal archive of art to open the first centre in Abuja. Her efforts as an artist and philanthropist address the social disadvantages faced by women in Nigeria- with 4 centres for Arts and Culture across Nigeria, creating an apprenticeship to train aspiring artists, focusing on young disadvantaged women.
